Ease of Doing Business and Corruption

Ease of Doing Business Ranking – Since 2016, Cambodia has been falling in rankings in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Global Index. The Kingdom currently ranks 144 out of 190 countries with a score of 53.8 which is only better than Myanmar and Laos in the ASEAN region. However, the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) said that the government has made significant efforts to facilitate doing business and the reason for the ranks falling may be attributed to the better performance of other countries and not the poor performance of Cambodia. CCC said that businesses can now also be registered online to make it easier for them. One area in which Cambodia does fare well is getting credit in which it ranks 25th in the world.

Perceived Transparency Ranking – Cambodia has consistently been ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world for a while now. According to the 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index its rank is 162 out of 180 countries and has a score of 20 of 100. It has the third lowest score in Asia Pacific and the lowest score in the ASEAN region. Cambodia has tried to reduce its corruption and has taken some positive steps to reduce sectoral corruption by decreasing petty corruption and increasing revenue collection from taxes and custom services. However, it needs to reduce grand and political corruption because unless this is done it would curb development and long-term investors would hesitate to start their business in Cambodia.
